week 2 : practice research lecture
in Jonathan’s lecture on practice research at Camberwell, he tasked us to think about something that we did or learned last week. the first thing that came to my mind was not connected to my art making, but that I learned to knit in the round. I wrote down that I looked it up online and didn’t like my first attempt and decided to unravel it, that I still don’t know it at the top of my head but that I like how it worked out. when he later asked us to reflect upon our answers in this task with a second set of questions, I realized that the frustration was a very small part of my experience and more importantly I was happy that I decided to unravel the first attempt. I also wrote down, that I know that I will eventually know how to do it without re-searching the process, but that I will probably not do it all by myself a few more times than necessary, just to be sure that I am doing it right.
It made me think about how unflustered I was by my “mistake” that I unraveled, yet still I know that I will take extra caution not to make a mistake. I’m not really a person who is afraid of doing something wrong. I am not ashamed of mistakes I make ( I do feel sorry if they impact other people, however ) and I don’t really mind giving up on something I feel like isn’t right for me.
yet I like to think about things I set out to do, and I tend to hold the action back with that. I would like to step into action faster and as I am not phased by mistakes I really don’t see a reason not to do so anymore.
in reference to my work about the spatiality of virtual space, one of my starting points was that whatever we’re imagining and planning never turns out to be exactly that in the physical. there is certain elements of our ideas that – no matter how technical our drawings are – can simply not be translated into physical space. some pieces never connect, or change their shape or fabric when being brought into physical existence. finding those pieces is exciting, but they can’t be found if they are being kept in the virtual.
